We feel that the most important element to your
child's development as an athlete is their coaching. We
believe strongly that in order to become great, you must be willing
to work and enhance your skills. It is our belief that
progress is impossible if you always do things the way you've always
done them.
Too often we feel kids and parents are misinformed
and led to believe that participation in many sports makes you
better in a single sport, this is a direct contradiction to motor
learning and would be rejected by most educated athletic
trainers/coach or teacher, It is like saying a student gets better
at French by learning Spanish. If you want to get better at
language then obviously you study that language, same applies to a
specific sport, if you want to get better, you must be willing to do
more of that sport. An athletic study conducted by Savelsbergh
and Van Der Kamp (2000) echoes what you just read; "specificity of
training is required in order to get meaningful learning effects."
Based on this research we have established a
volleyball club in Hurricane Valley to assist young women and (in
January 2009) young men in enhancing their ability as volleyball
players. Currently over 75% of the Hurricane High volleyball
girls are playing club volleyball and the numbers are equal or
higher for most high performing HS volleyball program across Utah,
NV, WY, CA and Idaho. Throughout the club season college
recruiters (based on NCAA evaluation periods) are able to view
players and get acquainted with their abilities; much of college
scholarships are earned by players that participate in club
volleyball, and no player from Hurricane has ever earned a
volleyball scholarship that was not a club participant dating back
to at least 2002 when club volleyball began to really establish
itself throughout Utah. WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE CLUB IF YOU
WANT TO PURSUE A COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL SCHOLARSHIP OR BECOME A TOP
PERFORMING HS PLAYER.
Club volleyball begins in January and ends in
early May, athletes can still participate in other sports for the
HS, they need not only play club volleyball. Athletes travel
throughout Utah playing in large tournaments against teams from all
over the Intermountain Region (UT, NV, ID, WY). Athletes
practice two - three times weekly and play in tournaments once or
twice per month (depending on the team). We began our
volleyball club with 9 girls in 2004, currently over 85 girls from
ages 10 - 17 participate, in 2008 three of our seven teams were
ranked in the top ten, including two in the top three in the
Intermountain West. Please come invest the time to become
great and have fun while doing it.
